Both Ends of the Envelope: What a Handwritten Letter Really Does

We tend to think of a handwritten letter as a one-way gift. A child sits down, writes a note to a grandparent, seals the envelope, and sends it off. Done.
But two recent findings—one from a neuroscience lab, one from a high school in Portland—suggest a letter is doing something on both ends. It's quietly shaping the brain of the kid writing it, and it's reaching the person who opens it in a way a text message never quite does.
Here's what the evidence shows.
What writing by hand does to a child's brain
In a 2024 study published in Frontiers in Psychology, researchers Audrey van der Meer and Ruud van der Weel at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology fitted 36 young adults with high-density EEG caps—256 sensors tracking electrical activity across the brain—and compared what happened when they wrote words by hand versus typed them.
The difference was striking. Writing by hand produced widespread connectivity between brain regions, in the theta and alpha frequency bands. Typing the same words did not.
“Connectivity patterns in these brain areas and at such frequencies are crucial for memory formation and for encoding new information and, therefore, are beneficial for learning,” the researchers wrote.
The reason, they explain, is the hand itself. The precise, controlled movements of forming each letter with a pen feed the brain a rich stream of visual and physical information that pressing identical keys simply doesn't. Why it matters for kids
That study was done on adults—but the scientists were direct about who it matters for most:
“Children, from an early age, must be exposed to handwriting activities in school to establish the neuronal connectivity patterns that provide the brain with optimal conditions for learning.”
In other words, when your child hunches over the kitchen table sounding out a note to a cousin, they aren't just being sweet. They're laying down the kind of brain connections that help them learn. The letter is screen-free, joyful, and—it turns out—good for their developing mind.
The other end of the envelope
Now for the receiving end. In Portland, Oregon, two Lincoln High School students, Henry Carpenter and Adrian Schulman, started a club called Memory Care Connections after volunteering at a local memory care facility. The idea was simple: students write handwritten letters, every couple of weeks, to older adults living with Alzheimer's and dementia.
What began at one school has grown to 15 chapters across Oregon, California, Arizona, Utah, Indiana, and even Taiwan. Volunteers hand-deliver the letters, often reading them aloud to residents and helping them write back.
The effect on the people receiving those letters is the part worth holding onto. As the program's executive director, Michelle Grossberg, put it:
“It really makes them light up.”
And it goes both ways. “For the student, you can form a genuine friendship with your pen pal,” Carpenter said. A piece of paper, a little time, and a stamp—turning strangers across two generations into friends.
Two halves of the same small act
Put the two findings side by side and you get the whole picture. Writing the letter shapes the brain of the child holding the pen. Receiving the letter lights up the person who opens it. The same five-minute act does both.
